Dykes Do Drag has always celebrated an expanding continuum of gender expression and performance. Sarah Gordon (The Glam King) and Heather Spear (The Gentleman King) started this queer performance art cabaret in 1999. The GKs, both professional modern dancers at the time, created the cabaret to bring together their love of great performance quality with entertainment and gender fuckery (not to mention the ability to be able to write off shiny pants and classy suits on their tax returns). It was designed specifically to be a cabaret to entertain women in the queer community, but to also have a little bit (or actually, a lot) of something for everyone to love (the audiences of Dykes Do Drag have always been diverse). The dearth of a nighttime entertainment scene for dykes in the early 2000s is illustrated by the fact that Dykes Do Drag, a monthly cabaret theater event, was chosen by the City Pages as the Best Lesbian Bar of 2003 (http://www.citypages.com/bestof/2003/award/best-lesbian-bar-2257/). While we’re on the “best of” topic, Heather as The Gentleman King was written up as the Best Drag King in 1999, a title The City Pages has yet to bestow on anyone else (http://www.citypages.com/bestof/1999/award/best-drag-king-1744/).
Dykes Do Drag is the longest running show of its kind in the area, and perhaps the country. It is a community of artists of all genders, sexualities, and disciplines, which has pioneered and fostered much of the queer performance art community in the Twin Cities over the last decade and a half. At its home at the Bryant Lake Bowl Cabaret Theater, the intimate environment encourages an intensity of connection between the audience and the performers. And the ability to eat and drink at your theater seats throughout the show certainly adds to the good times.
Performers for this anniversary show include:
Barbara Gordon, Beezy LaRue, Butt Girl, CocoaPuffCrunchOLicious, Dicky Van Dyke, Digital Trauma, The Duke of Oil, Esmé Rodríguez, Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, Miss Pattergood, Mrs. Smith, Prince Ass Maggie Mayhem, Sacka Jo Weedah, Sheila Rouse, Sweet Lilly Bee and The Glam King.
Hosted by The Gentleman King with his awkward awesome MC skills, with Lil’ Cooch and DiEthyl Mercury keeping us stage mangled and looking pretty.
Dykes Do Drag is produced by Heather Spear at the Bryant Lake Bowl Cabaret Theater in Minneapolis. The 15th Anniversary show will be February 20th, 21st, and 22nd. All shows are at 10pm (9:30 doors).
The show is always the third full weekend of the months of February, April, June, September, and November. There is always a discounted student price on the Thursday night of each run.
